Weekly News - July 7th

  • Jangle-rockers Mr. Rascal will be launching their debut album, A Pocketful Of Smoke, this Saturday at QPAC's Cremorne Theatre. If the first single, 'Let It Roll', is anything to go by, A Pocketful Of Smoke will be one of the most promising albums to be released in Brisbane this year.
  • New Music:
    • Tragic/Athletic - Three Months At Sea/Make For The Hills: I couldn't get these two tracks to play on myspace, but, having heard 'Three Months At Sea' previously, I can say it is a beautifully epic track from the band, complete with a soaring brass part towards the end of the song.
    • Willows - Locus
    • The Revolutionists - No Warning
    • Sirinival - Happiness Is A (Live)/Fortune Favours The Brave (Live)
    • Marl Karx - Spout

Weekly News - June 30th

So weekly might be a somewhat misleading title, but I'm going to try and get this back on schedule.

  • In case you've yet to hear, Brisbane has a new festival in the guise of Sounds Of Spring. The event will be held October 11 at the RNA Showgrounds. Unfortunately the first lineup doesn't excite me all that much, with only a smattering of interesting acts on the bill. Hopefully any forthcoming announcements can rectify this.
  • I'm not sure if I totally grasp the concept of Brisbane PARK(ing) Day, but from what I can tell it partially involves gigs being played in carparks. I'm all for this sort of thing, and if you are to then head over to the website to get involved. The actual day is September 19th so get in quick.
  • Room40 head honcho Lawrence English has a forthcoming album titled Kiri No Oto. The album is apparently an attempt to transpose "the visual effects of mist, mirage, snow fall and the like to a variety of acoustic situations."
  • Local imprint Mere Noise Records is now offering a number of past releases for purchase on iTunes. The label has released some great records from bands like Texas Tea, Butcher Birds, The Dangermen, and The Warm Guns.
  • New Music:
    • At Sea - Scream Like A Queen (Live): This is a damn good song; sounds like The Drones if Gareth Liddiard was a girl.
    • No Anchor - Drone Me Out Pt.1/Drone Me Out Pt.2/The Night Of My 2nd Car Crash: These three tracks are off No Anchor's forthcoming debut, Fire Flood And Acid Mud (which was recorded by Cam). For and band consisting of just bass and drums, No Anchor get a very impressive sound happening.
    • Mr. Rascal - Here Comes The Winter/Funeral Song/Ode To Peace: Mr Rascal also has an album due in the near future, and they're showcasing the songs on myspace at the moment. These three are all great little folk-rock numbers. 'Ode To Peace' is a standout with its mandolin/choir thing making it something like Radiohead's 'Exit Music (For A Film)'.
    • Do The Robot - Dressed In Red (Demo): Sounds like strawberry ice-cream.
    • The Fricken Hecks - Hot Kives/NIghtmare of Anne Stripe/For The Girls
    • Hot Liquid Sex - Emergency: From their debut EP Unexpect The Expected.

Review: Mr. Rascal - Let It Roll

Let It Roll is the first release from Mr Rascal, the creative vehicle of Christian Duell, and the lead single and two demos on show are a good indication of the quality music Mr Rascal's forthcoming debut album is sure to provide.

'Let It Roll' is an uplifting folk-rock number, with a driving rhythm section, dueling guitars, banjoes, violin, and the prerequisite use of organ necessary to complete such a song. The attraction of 'Let It Roll' is not in the instrumental prowess of Mr Rascal, however, rather it's in the amazing use of melody and harmony, as well as Duell's touching lyrics. The combination of opposing high and low vocal harmonies, Duell's own vocals, and the ever present organ results in a song that sounds absolutely massive for the folk song that it is.

The two demo songs are a little more stripped back, but neither lack the impact of 'Let It Roll'. 'Hands Tied' is especially impressive, with the acoustic guitar and harmonica perfectly matching Duell's vocals. 'Hands Tied' also evokes the style of the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, but whereas Smith matched uplifting melodies with rather depressing lyricism, Duell goes the other way and combines melancholic music with lyrics that are brimming with positivity. 'The Schoolyard' follows in the same vein, cutting back the sonic side of things to a greater exten while maintaining the harmonies. In this case though the song is a little to bare, although in all fairness the song is billed as a demo and must be treated as a work in progress.

Indeed Let It Roll is a strong indication of what to expect from Mr. Rascal's forthcoming debut LP A Pocketful Of Smoke. The straightforward singer-songwriter harmonies grab the listener and refuse to let go until the song has run its course. Hopefully Duell can keep up the level of quality he has set for himself with this debut release.
